September event at CityGate Centre supports A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter
Paws on the Parkway, a pet fair and adoption event supporting A.D.O.P.T. Pet Shelter, a nonprofit no-kill animal rescue in Naperville, will be held noon to 4 p.m. Saturday, Sept. 28, at CityGate Centre.
Hosted by CityGate Centre property manager Calamos Real Estate LLC, the day will include pet service exhibits along with a selection of adoptable dogs will be on-site.
Since its inception in 1989, A.D.O.P.T., which stands for animals deserving of proper treatment, has placed more than 30,000 dogs and cats into loving furrever homes. And since adding its clinic in 2009, it has spayed or neutered 10,000 animals.
In addition to providing shelter and care to animals, A.D.O.P.T. serves the community through its crisis assistance program which facilitates foster care for pets that must be surrendered due to crisis, such as illness or being temporarily unhoused, so family pets can be kept out of the shelter system and cared for, free of charge, until their family is again able to care for them.
While adoption fees generally are in the range of a few hundred dollars, sheltering and caring for a single animal—particularly one of the many who come to the shelter sick or hurt—can cost thousands of dollars before it is ready for adoption.
“We included a pet fair with the adoption event to add some fun and engage families with pets—even those who may not have adoption on their radar right now—to come out, learn about products and services, get coupons and samples, and enjoy themselves,” said Calamos Real Estate SVP Ken Witkowski. “While they’re here, they can support the A.D.O.P.T. by purchasing raffle tickets or giving a direct donation to the organization to help care for all those animals they can’t take home.”
Witkowski and his team are particularly excited that this year's event will be held during the Naperville Artisan Market, a 2-day event at CityGate Centre from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. both Saturday and Sunday. In May, Naperville Artisan Market drew nearly 5,000 patrons to the community and the fall market could boost support for the shelter.
Exhibitors include Dog Training Elite which trains family pets as well as service dogs and therapy dogs, Pet Suites which provides doggy daycare, boarding, grooming and more, and Vets Helping Heroes, a nonprofit dedicated to helping restore lost freedom and peace of mind to wounded veterans, first responders and Gold Star families by gifting specially trained and certified assistance dogs.
Admission and parking for family-friendly Paws on the Parkway is free. Information is at CityGateCentre.com/Paws.
